At James Baldwin, we believe students learn best through hands-on activities that build upon their interests and connect to their life experiences.  Students receive instruction in all strand areas of mathematics – number sense and computations, data analysis, geometry, measurement, algebra and probability. Teachers plan differentiated lessons and activities to best meet the needs of all students.  The focus is on understanding concepts as well as mastering facts and algorithms. Students are encouraged to solve problems in multiple ways which creates flexible thinking.  They also play math games regularly to reinforce their learning. 

Literacy Corner

Get your children excited for reading by following these suggestions: 

• Read together. Let them see you read a book or magazine.
• Ask your child to share the books s/he/they are choosing.
• Ask them to share an important idea or scene from the books they read.
• Visit the public library. All SPS students can have a library card.
• Encourage them to read every night!
